07/02/2009 - Burns Supper - Edinburgh UK

Burns supper – Saturday 7th February 2009 at
Apex International Hotel, Edinburgh

The Burn’s Supper was another great success. This year’s event coincided with Robert Burns’ 250th anniversary. There was a great turn out and there were also many familiar faces from last year with some new people who wanted to show their support for the Akhonya Trust.

The night started traditionally with the haggis being piped in by John Rae a.k.a. the Pickled Piper. The Address to the Haggis was once again performed brilliantly by William Wallace (I don’t tire of mentioning we had ‘William Wallce’ on board for the event). He has been fantastic donating his free time to the Trust and agreeing to perform again. He also roused the room in between courses of a lovely dinner with some traditional Rabbie Burns’ songs; which were sung enthusiastically if a little out of tune.

Willie also performed two brilliant Burns’ poems linking Burns’ life to the lives of farmer’s in Kenya. This poem aided Margaret Dowe in making her less traditional speech an Immortal Memory. She talked about her recent wonderful trips to Kenya and the projects underway at The Akhonya Trust.

The Wallace family then continued their marvellous contribution to the evening when Alan Wallace performed the Toast to the Lassies. His Rabbie Burns’ version of Mambo Number 5 was absolutely brilliant. Performing must run in the Wallace family blood! The Reply to the Laddies was presented by our very own stand up comedian Margaret Steel; who had the room literally crying with laughter. It was one of the most memorable toasts I have witnessed and one of the highlights of the evening!

This year the raffle took place thanks to some wonderful donations including crystal shot glasses donated by Margaret Steel, a meal for two at the Heights Restaurant donated by the Apex Hotel and a Toshiba Laptop donated by Catherine Dowe. Samantha Dobbie won this laptop and kindly re-donated it back to the Trust so we were able to raise more for Akhonya.

After all this the entertainment kicked off what was alreay a superb evening. And as if Willie hadn’t performed enough for us; he wowed us all again with the Tam O’Shanter from heart with props and all! Then the Portobello Music School African Band performed their wonderful Afro-Ceilidh. And this year they did not just bring their drums but an African harp and a thumb piano. This is when all inhibition went out the window, aided by the alcohol, and some very interesting dance moves were taken to the floor. We were kindly aided by Bebe – part of the African band - who showed us how it was meant to look!

We managed to raise £636 this year and would like to thank everyone who attended, performed and donated. We anticipate it will all take place again next year on the 30th January 2010. We hope you can all make it and bring your dancing shoes!
