Christmas Give a Gift campaign starts

Christmas Give a Gift campaign starts

As Christmas is approaching we are informing everyone of the outstanding success of this project to date and how massive an impact giving an animal to a family can have.

To read more, scroll down for some of the success stories.

Here is the story of the cow Owen

Mary Tukwa is the guardian of three children Mourine, Peter and Wilkister. Mary's husband died 10 years ago and she was left with no source of income. She has depended on handouts and sometimes she was forced to go without food.

In 2004 she joined SAIPEH on the guardianship project and in 2005 The Akhonya Trust gave her a dairy cow called Owen.

Owen calved about 4 four months ago and now gives them 6 litres of milk a day. She uses two litres at home and sells the rest at Ksh30 per litre, which translates to 3600/= per month.

"I am just like an employed person," says Mary.

She uses the money to buy food, clothing and other basic needs. She is no longer dependent on handouts. Her children are now assured three meals a day.
She says she will take care of the calf well so that she can donate it to another guardian to enjoy as she is. Mary is quite grateful for this support.
“Owen came in as a blessing to this family. Owen is her most treasured asset”

This Christmas you too could buy a gift for someone that has this kind of impact on a family or community.

Here is the story of the cow Geordie

Bulimbo Integrated Programme is a disability programme which caters for 21 physically disabled children within Bulimbo Primary School. On 22nd May 2006 Bulimbo received a donation of a cow from The Akhonya Trust.

Geordie calved in January 2007 and the proceeds from milking provide the project with Ksh3,500/= per month profit. This has allowed the project to start a lunch programme in order to reduce the distance travelled for the children.

Previously this Unit completely relied on support and assistance from Mumias EARC for the children but now they have independently managed to pay for: the repair of a child’s’ wheelchair; bought Polio boots; transported children to hospital and rehabilitation; paid for a new wheelchair and has paid for the uniforms for 3 needy pupils.

Previously the children had to walk a long distance for water but the introduction of the project persuaded the neighbouring Secondary school to allow them to tap water from their school which has made water available not just for “Geordie” but for the entire school.

The upkeep of the cow helps educate the children in their Agriculture lessons as they learn practically of the use of manure in farming and how to effectively milk a dairy animal.

This Christmas you too could buy a gift for someone that has this kind of impact on a family or community.
