“Breeding programme launch"
Extension of the Give a Gift programme
Most of you will be aware of the success of our “Give a Gift” project and many of you have donated animals to families who support some of our HIV/AIDS orphans. We currently buy these animals from farmers in other areas of Kenya, for example the goats are purchased from near Nairobi which obviously incurs transportation costs and logistical complications.
Because of this we have decided to extend this programme by starting our own “Breeding programme” to be based at the orphanage. Not only will this save money but will also reduce the risk of buying animals which have not been looked after correctly.
The impact of this programme will be massive and will help the orphanage to become more and more self-sustaining as the years go on. It will also be used as an educational project for the children at the orphanage, teaching them farming and husbandry skills which will be essential for some of them in their futures.
Since its inception the “Give a Gift” programme has donated approximately 60 cows, 90 goats and 250 chickens and currently supports around 400 children. I.e. One guardian supporting one orphan and 2/3 other children.
We are therefore asking you all to consider donating to purchase animals. These make a great birthday present as you will receive a certificate with a photo of the animal and you get to name it. Or maybe, you and your work colleagues can have a cake sale or other fundraising event and pull names out of a hat to pick the name.
This can start by the purchase of just one chicken at approximately £5.00 to a goat for £50-£60.00 which obviously reaps a higher income from the selling of milk to a cow £100-150 which can make a family positively wealthy in this part of the world. The donator chooses a name for the animal and receives a certificate showing the animal “at home”.
